Jona Lewis’s ‘Stop the Cavalry’ is the best Christmas song ever. There, I said it. The plodding militaristic beat feels out of place amongst the saccharine pop tunes that most Christmas songs offer. Even the subject matter is negative; the song is from the point of view of a soldier who is at war during Christmas. The song even embraces 80s Cold War paranoia ‘Mary Bradley waits at home, in the nuclear fall out zone’ this is juxtaposed with the images of cavalry marching, war is timeless. All of this is delivered by Jona Lewie who is common and casual throughout.
